Welcome to the Sumo Mailing List (SML) FAQ. This will, hopefully, answer some of the more common questions asked on the list, as well as provide a few resources for the Sumo aficionado. This FAQ will be posted on (or around) the 10th of each month.

General Questions

Q: What is the SML?
A: It is an email list where fans and supporters of the martial art of Sumo can discuss and learn about the culture, history, and sport of Sumo.
Q: Do I need to know Japanese to participate on the list?
A: No. The language for this list is English.
Q: Why are there so many Japanese words popping up all over the place?
A: Sumo is inherently Japanese, so it follows that the language of Sumo would be, too. However, there are a number of places online where you can find definitions for any words you don’t understand. See the Resources section below.
Q: How do I subscribe to the list?
A: The recommended way to subsccribe is by going to the list website https://lists.yorikiri.com/mailman3/lists/sumo.lists.yorikiri.com/.
Q: What are the rules for posting on the list?
A: There aren’t any "written in stone" rules. However, general conventions include:
  • Use plain text if possible; HTML is allowed but not preferred.
  • Prepend subjects with tags like [Games], [Spoiler], [Sales] when appropriate.
  • Trim unnecessary quoted lines, especially signatures.
  • Avoid empty “me too” replies. Contribute meaningful content.
  • Engage respectfully and keep discussions fun and constructive.
Q: Is there an archive of this list?
A: The archive lists from 12/2019 thorugh to the creartion of this new list are accessible from the menu on he left. Archives previously available on Banzuke.com, no longer seem to be available. List archives from the new list will be available at - https://lists.yorikiri.com/archives/.
Q: Can I search the list archives?
A: Yes, the list archives are searchable. See the answer to the prievious question for list archive locations.
Q: Can I send attachments?
A: No. Attachments are not permitted to reduce load and prevent virus spread.
Q: Why are replies sent to the list by default?
A: The list is configured this way based on member feedback.
